In RF-PUNCH Pro, you can perform the punching shear design on wall corners and wall ends. The basis for the design is the punching load, which is automatically determined from the RFEM internal forces in the connected surface. Since the surface internal forces from the RFEM calculation may be subject to the influence of singularity locations, this can also have a negative influence on the determined punching load at the wall corner or end. This article describes possible optimization options that you can use to minimize this unfavorable influence.
Singularities occur in a limited area due to the concentration of the stress-dependent result values. They are conditioned by the FEA methodology. In theory, the stiffness and/or the stress in an infinite size concentrate on an infinitesimally small area.
RFEM 5 provides the option to define a smoothing area in the "Results" → "New Average Region" menu. You can choose a rectangular, circular, or elliptical shape. With this tool you can, for example, "smooth" singularities due to nodal loads in a desired averaged region.
The averaged internal forces from the previously defined average regions can also be used for designing concrete surfaces. To do this, click [Details] in RF‑CONCRETE Surfaces, then select the corresponding check box. This function is accessible only if you previously defined an average region.
The results of solid stresses can be displayed as colored 3D points in the finite elements.
Various design parameters of the cross-sections can be adjusted in the serviceability limit state configuration. The applied cross-section condition for the deformation and crack width analysis can be controlled there.
For this, the following settings can be activated:
- Crack state calculated from associated load
- Crack state determined as an envelope from all SLS design situations
- Cracked state of cross-section - independent of load
In the "Deflection and Design Support" tab under "Edit Member", the members can be clearly segmented using optimized input windows. Depending on the supports, the deformation limits for cantilever beams or single-span beams are used automatically.
By defining the design support in the corresponding direction at the member start, member end, and intermediate nodes, the program automatically recognizes the segments and segment lengths to which the allowable deformation is related. It also automatically detects whether it is a beam or a cantilever due to the defined design supports. The manual assignment, as in the previous versions (RFEM 5), is no longer necessary.
The "User-Defined Lengths" option allows you to modify the reference lengths in the table. The corresponding segment length is always used by default. If the reference length deviates from the segment length (for example, in the case of curved members), it can be adjusted.
This feature also contributes to the clearly-arranged display of your results. Clipping planes are intersecting planes that you can place freely throughout the model. The zone in front of or behind the plane is consequently hidden in the display. This way, you can clearly and simply show the results in an intersection or a solid, for example.
The calculation of my model results in unrealistically high stresses at many locations. What could be the reason for this?
How is it possible to avoid singularities on membrane surfaces due to form-finding?
In some areas of the modeled downstand beams or ribs, there are also walls or pilasters. Is it necessary to separate and remove the downstand beams on the walls, or should they continue through them?
Is it also possible to determine the stiffnesses of an existing column instead of a fixed nodal support?
